Hiking in Guatemala, can be taken in the mountains, volcanoes and forests, all of which offer spectacular scenery, and incredible wildlife. Trekking in Guatemala is especially common on Lake Atitlan, and around Antigua, Quetzaltenango and Xela or Ixil triangle. Pacaya volcano near Guatemala City, is a 2-hrs climb where trekkers can see lava and great views. The old towns near Lake Atitlan provide day-trips to Acatenango, Fuego and Volcan San Pedro. 

Begin this tour in Antigua with a tour of the city and surrounds. transfer to the foothills of the active Pacaya volcano and take a hike up the volcano. Watch the molten rock area where hot steam seeps through crevices in the base of the volcano. Lake Atitlan, one of the most beautiful in Guatemala, offers opportunities to kayak, zipline, canopy walk and hike to the surrounding villages. In the north, Yaxha and Tikal national parks, hill lead up to two scenic lakes archaeological sites. 

And, experience hiking the volcano, kayaking in Lake Atitlan & wildlife in El Petén.

Guatemala Adventure

Antigua, San Juan Comalapa, Atitlan, Yaxha & Tikal

Day 1 – Arrive
Antigua, Guatemala Meet and greet on arrival at Guatemala City airport and transfer to Antigua. It is advisable to start Wednesday or Sundays so you do not miss out any activities.

Day 2 – City Tour & The Surrounds
Antigua This day is for you to explore Antigua and surrounds. You will have a choice to select one of the two half-day tours; the Fair Trade Coffee tour or Antigua Walking tour.

Antigua Walking Tour: This tour will cover the cultural, historical & social highlights of this colonial city with a behind-the-scenes look at some of the many ruined churches, convents, and cathedrals. This tour is flexible and if you have specific sites that you wish to see please notify your guide. If you wish to visit other monuments you will need to pay the entrances directly.

Day 3 – Pacaya Volcano Hike
Antigua Pacaya Volcano Hike: Morning transfer to the foothills of the active Pacaya volcano. The hike takes about 2.5 hours of which the initial stretch is fairly strenuous through wonderful pine forest up to the molten rock area where hot steam seeps through crevices in the base of the volcano. On the hike we can enjoy great views of volcano, the pacific lowlands and all the way to El Salvador. Half way down, we stop to enjoy a picnic lunch with the impressive volcano in close sight. Return to Antigua.

Day 4 – Biking & Hiking
Totonicapan A short transfer will bring you to the town of San Juan Comalapa, which is famous for its local market. Once there you will have time to wander through the market and admire the native painters. After lunch enjoy hiking and biking down to Totonicapan. Here you will also have dinner and spend the evening with a local family.

Totonicapan Homestay: Located deep in the beautiful Maya highlands. Here, a local guide will help you discover a variety of the handicrafts for which this region is so well known. Stop along the way may include a visit with Don Miguel Hernández, who uses giant wood looms to make lovely, colourful textiles, or to a ceramics workshop where clay plates are handcrafted on pottery wheels and crushed glass is used to make lead-free paint. Lunch at a local house that is accompanied by a marimba and folkloric dance performance. (B, L)

Day 5 – Hike & Bike Alaska
Lake Atitlan Today you will transfer even deeper into the Guatemalan highlands to the spectacular Zunil Mountains where you will enjoy stunning views. At times you will be able to see ten volcano peaks at the same time while hiking and biking!

During the ride you will make a stop at a remote, local village to experience their weaving arts.
After lunch you will be driven to the shores of Lake Atitlan.

Day 6 – Kayak & Bike
Lake Atitlan Today you will kayak on what many have called “the most beautiful lake in the world”, Lake Atitlan. Pass local fishermen, indigenous Mayan women doing their wash and men working in the fields wearing their famous embroidered Santiago shorts as well as taking in the breathtaking views of the three lake volcanoes.

Once at Cerro de Oro, hike the impressive, sacred hill. Sometimes you can witness Mayan rituals in process, which is an amazing and authentic glimpse of local Mayan life in the area. When you are ready you will be transferred back to the lodge on local pick-up trucks.

Day 7 – Zipline Adventure
Lake Atitlan Transfer to the Reserva Atitlan to enjoy an exhilarating Zip Line adventure! Play Tarzan and glide through the forest canopy courtesy of a series of cables, a helmet, and a very secure harness.

Then stop to visit the colourful market at Solola, one f the largest indigenous towns in Guatemala. On market day, the whole town erupts in a frenzy of activity as traders and villagers besiege the plaza and surrounding streets. You can’t help but gawk at the iridescent local costume, worn by both sexes, though the men’s outrageous “space cowboy” shirts are especially eye-catching.
Afterwards transfer to Antigua for your final evening in Guatemala.

Day 8 – via Chichicastenango
Flores Transfer out to the highland town of Chichicastenango. With your private guide explore this famous market both the local areas of the fruit & vegetables & everyday items as well as the craft area where you can find endless variety of beautiful textile, wooden & ceramic crafts. Visit the famous St Tomas Church where local Maya people come to perform Maya rituals - demonstrating the interesting way the two faiths have combined in recent times. After lunch transfer to the airport for your flight to Flores. On arrival transfer to your hotel.

Day 9 – Sunset Trek
Yaxha National Park Free morning in El Remate Area. In the afternoon, transfer to Yaxha National Park (1 hour) where you will enjoy a private guided tour of this lesser visited, Mayan ceremonial site. Set atop a hill overlooking two scenic lakes for magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Enjoy the sunset drinks and snacks while watching the sun set over the surrounding rainforest and nearby lake Yaxha. Then trek back through the jungle with torches; perhaps spotting some nocturnal wildlife along the way.

Day 10 – Transfer
Guatemala City With your private guide, take a morning tour to Tikal archaeological sites. Your guide will explain the history and culture of the Maya people. Lunch is provided at a local restaurant. After lunch you will have time to explore the museum at the visitor centre. Take a private transfer to the airport for your flight to Guatemala City.

Day 11 – Depart
Guatemala City Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.

When to go Guatemala has a very good weather all year round with only two seasons. November through April (Dry) has dazzling blue skies and warm sunshine. May through October (Wet) is the rainy season with a short break between July and August. During this time, you can often expect sunny mornings and showers falling predominantly in the afternoon, usually lasting no longer than a couple of hours, with the worst of the rain falling in September and October.

Getting There Most flights to Guatemala from the UK are routed via US hub cities: Atlanta, Houston, New York or Miami. Airfares always depend on the season, with the highest being from Christmas to February, around Easter and in July and August. Other options include flying via Madrid on Iberia, via Amsterdam and Panama with KLM, or via Mexico with a number of airlines and then on to Guatemala with a Mexican airline. Flores airport, near Tikal, has a few flights from Belize City and Cancún.
