Mekong River Cruise
Cruise on the Mekong River, fed by the snowmelt waters from the Himalayas, that flows 2,700 miles into the sea in South Vietnam, is an experience. The Vietnamese call it Song Cuu Long, the Nine Dragons River, for the nine branches of the Mekong Delta that makes perfect conditions for growing rice. The Mekong’s biodiversity is second to that of the Amazon, it supports livelihood of thousands of people, as it flows through six countries.
The Mekong River Cruise through Vietnam and Cambodia is full of rural communities, floating villages such as Kompong Luong, and endless rice paddies, pagodas and temples. Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), are now bustling cities. Religious sites like Angkor Wat and sunset-pink Banteay Srei offer timeless glimpses of everyday life along the Mekong River. Cruises on the Mekong travel between Siem Reap, northwest Cambodia, to Ho Chi Minh City or reverse.

When to go The climate in Vietnam and Cambodia remains tropical. The best time to visit the region is in the months between November and mid-March. During these months the days are pleasant and the nights are chilly. Thereafter the temperature begins to rise and March to May gets very hot. The monsoon arrives in the month of April-May and peak in August but continues until mid-October. Travel is difficult during these months. Avoid travelling during March-April and August.
Getting There There are few direct flights from Europe to Vietnam’s three main international airports but these are steadily increasing over the years. The majority of visitors take indirect flights routed through Bangkok, Singapore or Hong Kong. It can be cheaper if you fly to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore or regular international carriers and from there take one of the low cost carriers to Vietnam.
There are no direct flights to Cambodia from the UK, but good connections are available from major Asian destinations. You can fly with Thai Airways to Bangkok, Malaysian Airlines to Kuala Lumpur or British Airways via Hong Kong. From there you can take the budget airline Air Asia or Dragon Air. The total journey time, excluding transit, is about 15 hours.
Passport/Visa British, European and Americans require a visa for Vietnam and Cambodia. You can obtain a 30-day tourist visa on arrival in Vietnam and Cambodia provided your passport is valid for at least six months. Two passport sized photographs will be required. Travellers are advised to check with their nearest Cambodian embassy or consulate.
