South Africa

South Africa Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park, in northeastern South Africa, is one of Africa’s largest game reserves. The park spans over the two provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. Its known for the high density of wild animals including the Big Five: Elephant, Lion, Rhino, Leopard and Buffalo. Hundreds of other mammals make their home here, as do diverse bird species such as vultures, eagles and storks. Mountains, bush plains and tropical forests are all part of the landscape.

The park’s landscape is home to a number of rivers notably; Limpopo in the north and the Crocodile in the south which act as barriers while others wind through the park. A vast network of paths and wilderness trails allow visitors to explore by self-drive. This comprehensive journey with South Africa highlights, including Kruger National Park, Botswana and Victoria Falls is one of our favourite itineraries. You will experience fascinating cultural touring, stunning landscapes and luxury safaris in two of the best game-viewing destinations in the world.

Getting There Johannesburg with its O.R. Tambo International Airport is the air transport hub of Southern Africa and is linked to the rest of the world by major airlines. Other international airports are located in Cape Town and Durban, but few flights from Europe or America fly directly to either destination. There is a good network of internal flights.

Travelling around South Africa is mostly by car and a good range of car rental companies are available. The road system is amongst the best in Africa. However, travelling off the beaten track to the national parks is virtually impossible by public transport. This is mostly organised by local tour operators.

When to go The best time to visit Kruger and most wildlife parks in South Africa is from May to September. This is the dry season and animals congregate around waterholes and rivers. The climate of South Africa is generally mild throughout the country with warm, sunny days and cool nights. There's really not a bad time to visit, but winter is a good time (especially October) if you are going for a safari – grass is short, and the animals tend to gather around watering holes.

In winter, due to altitude, temperatures drop to the freezing point, and in places even lower. Snow is a possibility June-August in the mountain areas. It generally rains in the afternoon during the summer (November-February) everywhere in the country except in the Cape Province, where it rains during the winter.
