San Agustín Lanquín, (or Lanquín), is a town in Guatemala’s Central Highlands. It is known for the cave system and the natural rock pools of Semuc Champey. The Lanquín Caves National Park is a network of limestone cave system that are several miles long and contain many areas that remain unexplored. The Lanquín Caves are a sacred site for Mayans, who view caves as passages to the underworld. Mayan ceremonies are sometimes still held within the caves.

Day 1 – Arrive
Antigua, Guatemala Meet and greet on arrival at Guatemala City airport and private transfer to Antigua.

Day 2 – City Tour & Surrounds
Antigua With your private guide and driver, you will explore Antigua and surrounds. You will have a choice to select one of the two half-day tours; the Fair Trade Coffee tour or Antigua Walking tour.

Fair Trade Coffee Tour: This tour begins with a short transfer to the small town of San Miguel Escobar, just outside of Antigua. With your private guide from As Green as it Gets (AGAIG), a local charity you will visit some of the families supported by this organisation. You can work alongside coffee farmers in their coffee making process. Coffee Season is Nov to Mar. This tour includes a donation to AGAIG which is also supported by our ground operator.

Antigua Walking Tour: This tour will cover the cultural, historical & social highlights of this colonial city with a behind-the-scenes look at some of the many ruined churches, convents, and cathedrals. This tour is flexible and if you have specific sites that you wish to see please notify your guide.

Day 3 – Highlands
Lake Atitlan Transfer through the highlands to the scenic Lake Atitlan where you’ll board a boat to ride across the lake to the village of San Juan La Laguna. Atitlan is recognized as both the deepest lake in Central America and one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. It is flanked by no less than three volcanoes and characterized by towns and villages of the Maya people.

Day 4 – San Juan Culture Tour
Lake Atitlan A full day tour of San Juan & Santiago. Transfer to San Juan La Laguna Village where you visit a local textile cooperative. You can also visit the local naïf painters before boarding the boat onto Santiago Village for lunch. After lunch you will visit the house where the Maya God Maximon. Each year a different "brotherhood" has the privilege of taking care of their God so his location changes. Once with Maximon you may see local shaman performing rituals for local people and if you wish you can ask your guide to help you hire the services of a shaman for you to have a personal ceremony performed.

Day 5 – Chichi Market Tour
Antigua Today you’ll be visiting the famous market at Chichi.  This is the biggest and most colourful market of Mesoamerica with enough time for shopping. You will also have an opportunity to see Maya rituals being performed in the Catholic Church. Transfer to Antigua for one-night stay.

Day 6 – Quetzal Reserve
Coban Transfer to Coban area with your private guide and driver. On the way you may stop to visit the Biotop El Quetzal. Here you will have the opportunity to see the famous Quetzal bird among many other species. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant.

Day 7 – Lanquin Caves
Semuc Champey Today you will visit Semuc Champey- a lime stone bridge on top of which there are several natural pools, filled with crystalline mountain spring water. Underneath the bridge is the Cahabón River. Later, transfer to Lanquin where you will visit the caves of Lanquin. These caves are the home of thousands of bats which will fly out at dusk.

Outside of the small Mayan village of Lanquin, are two natural geological formations that draw visitors from around the world, the Lanquin Caves and the pools of Semuc Champey. The Lanquin Caves is a network of caves, about 15 km long through which flows an underground river. The Semuc Champey is Maya means “where the river hides beneath the earth.”  At the base of a natural land bridge, the Cahabon River plunges underground for 300 meters.  On top of this limestone bridge, a series of natural springs form clear pools and waterfalls, perfect for an afternoon of swimming.

Optional: Request for 2D/1N extension to Cancun & Candelaria Caves or to Chiminos Island Lodge to visit Auateca Site and Rainforest wildlife.

Day 8 – Relax or Explore
Tikal This morning transfer to your hotel in the Tikal Area (approx. 5 hours). Enjoy the rest of the day free to explore the area or just to relax at your hotel.

Day 9 – Zipline Adventure
Yaxha National Park In the morning we visit the Ixpanpajul canopy tour where you can choose between the exhilarating zip line or the more tranquil canopy bridge walk. Then we transfer to Yaxha National Park for a picnic lunch and to explore this atmospheric lakeside site.

Day 10 – Tikal Ruins
Guatemala City Today you will be guided on an extraordinary  tour to explore the amazing UNESCO protected Mayan Temple site of Tikal where huge Mayan temples rise above the jungle canopy and monkeys and tropical birds are abundant in the surrounding rainforest.  

For centuries this city was completely covered under jungle. The most prominent surviving buildings include six very large Mesoamerican step pyramids, labelled Temples I - VI, each of which support a temple structure on their summits. Follow in the footsteps of Maya royalty and commoners to such sites as the majestic Temple of the Jaguar (44mtrs), Temple of the Masks (38mtrs), the Acropolis and much more.

Day 11 – Depart
Guatemala City Private transfer to the airport for your flight to Guatemala City.

When to go Guatemala has a very good weather all year round with only two seasons. November through April (Dry) has dazzling blue skies and warm sunshine. May through October (Wet) is the rainy season with a short break between July and August. During this time, you can often expect sunny mornings and showers falling predominantly in the afternoon, usually lasting no longer than a couple of hours, with the worst of the rain falling in September and October.

Getting There Most flights to Guatemala from the UK are routed via US hub cities: Atlanta, Houston, New York or Miami. Airfares always depend on the season, with the highest being from Christmas to February, around Easter and in July and August. Other options include flying via Madrid on Iberia, via Amsterdam and Panama with KLM, or via Mexico with a number of airlines and then on to Guatemala with a Mexican airline. Flores airport, near Tikal, has a few flights from Belize City and Cancún.
