Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) is known for its French architecture, Cu Chi tunnels and museums. Begin your day with a coffee, Vietnamese love their coffee and Saigon has the best cafes. A waft of food peppered with aromatic spices will explain, Saigon is big on street food. Explore the ancient city of Hoi An, also known as the foodie’s paradise.

Angkor Wat Temple complex, is located in the northwest of Cambodia at the head of Tonle Sap lake. Originally built as a Hindu temple of god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire, it gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple. Cruise on Tonle Sap lake and visit the workshop of the Artisans d'Angkor.

Getting There There are few direct flights from Europe to Vietnam’s three main international airports but these are steadily increasing over the years. The majority of visitors take indirect flights routed through Bangkok, Singapore or Hong Kong. It can be cheaper if you fly to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore or regular international carriers and from there take one of the low cost carriers to Vietnam.

There are no direct flights to Cambodia from the UK, but good connections are available from major Asian destinations. You can fly with Thai Airways to Bangkok, Malaysian Airlines to Kuala Lumpur or British Airways via Hong Kong. From there you can take the budget airline Air Asia or Dragon Air. The total journey time, excluding transit, is about 15 hours.

When to go The climate in Vietnam and Cambodia remains tropical. The best time to visit the region is in the months between November and mid-March. During these months the days are pleasant and the nights are chilly. Thereafter the temperature begins to rise and March to May gets very hot. The monsoon arrives in the month of April-May and peak in August but continues until mid-October. Travel is difficult during these months. Avoid travelling during March-April and August.
