Panama San Blas Holiday

Panama San Blas Holiday

San Blas Archipelago, lies off Panama’s Caribbean coast, between Golfo de San Blas and the Colombian border. Of its nearly 380 small islands, just about 60 are inhabited. The Kuna, a tribe indigenous to Panama, fiercely protective of their independence, runs its own economy and tourism, making it the eco-friendliest destination in Central America. Local Kuna residents take diving and snorkelling tours and run boat tours between islands. Flights operate to 5 islands from Panama City.

Although only a 20-minute plane ride from Panama City, a trip to the San Blas islands will transport you 20 centuries into the past. The Kuna Indians have maintained their own economic system, language, customs and culture, with distinctive dress, legends, music and dance and have thus avoided traditional tourism development. Facilities are few and simple. Spend your days kayaking through the diverse marine eco-systems of Panama’s rainforests, reefs and channels.

And, experience sea sports such as sea-kayaking, diving and snorkelling.

Getting There International flights arrive at Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City. Flight from the US are mostly routed through Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston or Miami and other Central and South American cities; KLM and Iberia fly from Amsterdam and Madrid, respectively. Flights from San José, in neighbouring Costa Rica, often stop in David before continuing on to Panama City. The recently upgraded airport in David is expected to see direct international flights from and to the US at some point.

When to go The best time to visit Panama is during the dry season from around mid-December to mid-April. There is a prolonged rainy season from May to November, with the heaviest rain between October and November. Rain in Panama tends to come in sudden short downpours followed by sunshine. The climate is less tropical at higher elevations. In mountain areas, the average annual temperature ranges from 10 C to 19 C at various mountain elevations.
