Galle, Tangalle, Yala National Park
Begin in Galle, the capital of the southern province and one of Sri Lanka's most cosmopolitan cities. Famous for its 17th century Dutch Fort, it is possibly the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in south and Southeast Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and south Asian traditions.
During private touring, visit local museums, explore evocative backstreets, walk on the sea walls to the lighthouse, look for reminders of the Dutch and British colonial years, observe daily life, and browse local shops, some of the best in Sri Lanka. Additional activities include visit to a sea turtle hatchery, a traditional mask workshop and the private country estate of Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka’s most acclaimed modern architect.
Next, spend time at Amanwella, an exclusive ultra-luxury resort overlooking a palm tree-shaded beach on the southern coast of Sri Lanka outside Tangalle. The advantage of a staying at Tangalle is the proximity to the major wildlife reserves of Sri Lanka. Yala National Park is about 1.5 hours away, Uda Walawe National Park is about 1 hour away and Bundala National Park only 40 Minutes away. If you are travelling between January and July, you can see giant sea turtles coming ashore at night to lay their eggs (esp. Rekawa and Kahandamodara beaches). One day visit Mulkirigala, a fascinating ancient rock temple about 30 minutes inland.

When to go Sri Lanka is a year-round destination with a tropical climate. However, the best time to go is between December and April when there are less rains and the climate is cooler. It is also the peak time for whale-watching in the south of the island where both blue and sperm whales can be seen. Rains arrive in May and stay until September during which it is hot and humid in the cultural triangle and the west coast. However, the hill country around Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains and Bandarawela remains cooler. June is a good time to visit the eastern port of Trincomalee, where blue and sperm whales are observed closer to land. There can be rains between September and November.
