Getting There There are regular flights to Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro (near Arusha) from South Africa, Europe and the United States. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is situated 46km/29mi east of Arusha, the starting point for Tanzania's most popular Northern Safari Circuit. Some domestic flights out of Arusha will leave from Kilimanjaro International Airport, but most flights to reserves leave from the much smaller Arusha Airport (ARK) located 8km west of town.
From either airport, you can catch an internal flight to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Zanzibar and most other destinations in Tanzania. Tanzania's main airport is Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) located 13km southwest of Dar es Salaam. The latter is the entry-point for visitors to the southern parks and Zanzibar.
When to go January to March: The best time to visit the Serengeti when the grazers are calving. These are also the warmest months. April and May: This is the 'green season' with lush vegetation, full rivers and lakes, and abundant birdlife and wild flowers, as well as baby animals. Best to avoid, as ‘long rains’ can be heavy and can make unsealed road travel difficult.
June to October (dry season): These are the coolest months when the weather is less humid, but still warm. It's a good time for game viewing and ideal for walking safaris, as animals start to congregate around shrinking water sources. The best time to witness the wildebeest migration is from August to October that usually takes place after the long rains. November onwards (rainy season): Things get increasingly wet and sticky. Whale shark season is October to March.
