Vumbura Plains Camp is a luxury camp situated in a private Kwedi concession in the extreme north of the Okavango Delta. The concession includes a wide variety of habitats, diverse wildlife and an enormous area of 60,000 hectares. It comprises of two separate seven-roomed satellite camps, each with its own raised dining, lounge and bar area tucked beneath a canopy of cool, shady, indigenous trees. A star-gazing deck with comfortable cushions protrudes into the floodplain, a place to gaze upwards, or a convivial camp fire setting.
Elephants are found all year round around the Vumbura Camp but peak roughly from May till late Oct. Lions are seen regularly and it is a good area for Leopard and Wild Dogs. Plains game is good year-round but peaks in the dry months with sightings of giraffe, sable antelope, zebra, common waterbuck and wildebeest, red lechwe and Cape buffalo. Encounters with hippo and crocodile are common in the waterways. Excellent birding especially Carmine Bee-Eaters in summer.
Activities at the Vumbura Plains Camp includes both land and water activities, principally nature viewing in open 4x4 vehicles, nature walks, mokoro trips and boat excursions. Whilst exploring the spectacular ecology of this area, one can enjoy close-up viewing of lion, leopard, elephant, cheetah and buffalo along with all the plains game.

Stay Vumbura Plains Camp is a Premier Safari Lodge with 14 luxurious tents. These are located in two wings. Entrance into the tents is through a wooden door with a bed in middle of the room. All units are with en-suite facilities including a separate toilet, double vanity and basin. There is an indoor & outdoor shower. Rooms have ceiling fans, safe and a mini bar. There is a sala (except the family rooms) and plunge pool on each tent deck.
The Camp The main Vumbura Plains Camp area encompasses open bar, dining room and lounge under canvas with views of lagoon. An open air Kgotla (boma) is used for dinner around campfire. There is small library, fire deck and curio shop. Menu of massage treatments (additional charge) - conducted in the privacy of the guest’s tent.
ChildCare Children of 6 years and older are welcome to stay at the Vumbura Plains Camp. For families travelling with children between 6 and 12 years, private activities need to be booked and paid for. The minimum age for boating activities is 6 years, while mekoro and walking activities have a minimum age of 13 years.
Safari Activities at the Vumbura Plains Camp include game drives via 6 x 10-seater open 4 x 4 Land Rovers each accommodating maximum seven guests, allowing all guests an outside seat. All vehicles are equipped with books on trees, birds and mammals along with a pair of binoculars and Peaceful Sleep insect repellent. Walking safaris are organised on request as these are dependent on the availability of walking guides. Night drives are undertaken with spot light.
Experience Fishing in the Vumbura Plains Camp is on a catch and release basis (prohibited in January and February for fish breeding purposes). The camp has a small stock of basic rods and reels but if interested bring your own fly fishing equipment. Mokoro excursions are in 6 mokoros (each mokoro seats two guests). There are two motor boats that seat six comfortably in each.
Location The Vumbura Camp is located in a private Kwedi concession on the North side of the Okvango Delta, bordering the Moremi Wildlife Reserve Maun. Vumbura Plains Camp encompasses a wide variety of habitats and species, that include almost every animal that occurs in the Okavango Delta biome.
Getting There Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta, which is best reached from Johannesburg by a 2-hour international flight. From Maun, there is a short 35-minute flight to get you to the Vumbura airstrip, followed by a 10-minute drive and a 5-minute boat trip, to reach the Vumbura Camp. Please note, light aircraft transfers have 15kg luggage restrictions in soft, squashable bags.
When to go Botswana’s winter months from May to October are dry and cool with chilly nights. This is also its high season. Botswana has hot, wet summers from October to April. Botswana has one rainy season which runs between December and February, sometimes continuing into March, with rain generally in the form of afternoon thundershowers. Best time to travel is all year round. There is great fishing from March to December, with catches of tiger fish, bream, catfish and tilapia.
